Divine Appointment with Jesus

Today I want to begin telling you a story. As I’m telling you this story it’s snowing outside and I’m enjoying a steaming cup of coffee with a fire crackling and instrumental music playing in the background. I picture you with a cup of coffee or hot tea, curled up with a blanket enjoying your winter weather or maybe you are sitting in carline with your heater on trying to stay warm or you’re taking a quick break from work. Wherever you are I invite you to sit with me for a few minutes.

Unlike today, the sun cast itself high in the noontime sky. The heat cast by the brilliant glow caused surfaces to be hot to the touch. While the dusty streets were deserted as the townspeople sought cool refuge in the shadows, there was one woman who dared brave the unbearable heat of the day. Yes, the sweat dripped from her brow and her dress began to stick a little from the drops of water trickling down her back, but she knew this was the only time she could go to the well to draw water. You see, she was an outcast of mixed race and the man she was currently involved with was not her husband. This was not acceptable behavior which meant she was not welcome at the well during the best times to draw water.

As she approached the well she saw a man and hoped she could quietly retrieve her water and be on her way like any ordinary day. But today was no ordinary day, for today she had a divine appointment that would change her life forever. What this man asked as she began drawing water startled her because he was a Jewish man and she was a Samaritan woman. The Jews despised the Samaritans and did whatever they could to avoid the Samaritans. However this man was no regular Jewish man, this man was Jesus and while He could have chosen to go around Samaria to Galilee he chose to go through Samaria because He had a divine appointment with the woman at the well.

My friends we are going to continue our story next week but today as we sit together I want to ask you a question. Do you spend time with Jesus daily? Do you take a seat beside Him at the well studying His Word and talking with Him in prayer? Just like Jesus had a divine appointment with the Samaritan woman in John 4: 1-9, he also has a divine appointment to meet with you. No matter your background or how unworthy you believe you are He wants to have a relationship with you. The way to have this relationship is to spend time with Him in His Word and in prayer.

This week I want you to take a look at your schedule and find a time that you can set aside to meet with Jesus – morning, noon or night whatever works best for you.

Next week we will continue our story of the woman at the well but as we close today I want to leave with a prayer.

Dear Lord, Just as the woman at the well had a divine appointment with you, I also have a divine appointment with you. Lord help me set time aside with you as a priority. Give me a heart that seeks after you, ears to hear your Word and a mind to believe your truths.  In Your Name I Pray, Amen.

In His Calm,
